American Institute of Bangladesh Studies (AIBS)

For Senior, Junior and Pre-Dissertation Fellowships for US Citizens:
The American Institute of Bangladesh Studies accepts research fellowship applications for scholars interested in conducting research that involves Bangladesh in all academic disciplines. All fellowships must be a minimum of two months, but no longer than twelve months. These grants are supported by the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs through the Council of American Overseas Research Centers.

Please note that all applications require a $25 processing fee. Once you complete your application, please send a check payable to “American Institute of Bangladesh Studies” to:

All awardees must be an AIBS individual member prior to commencing the fellowship. Individual membership costs $25 annually.  Please click here for membership information.
 
 
Senior Fellowships
  • Due to grant funding restrictions, fellowships are currently only available for US Citizens.
  • Because of ever-changing security concerns, please visit the AIBS website at www.aibs.net or click here for the latest AIBS travel policy to Bangladesh.  
  • Senior Fellowship applications from AIBS member institutions in the US will incur no additional fees; applications from non-member institutions require submission of a $250 membership fee.
  • Important Note for Senior Fellowship Applicants:  If you are a Board of Trustee or Executive Committee member for AIBS, you must step down from your position when you submit your application. Please send an email to the AIBS office at aibs@southasia.wisc.edu informing us of your decision.
All Senior applicants must be:
  1. Enrolled/employed at a US academic institution, and
  2. US Citizens
Each Senior Fellow applicant must:
  • be an individual member of AIBS (click here for membership information) and
  • hold a PhD and
  • have a well-developed research agenda relevant to Bangladesh

Junior Fellowships
  • Due to grant funding restrictions, fellowships are currently only available for US Citizens.

All Junior applicants must be:
  1. Enrolled/employed at a US academic institution, and
  2. US citizens
Each Junior Fellowship applicant must:
  • be an individual member of AIBS (click here for membership information) and
  • have passed the PhD exams and entered PhD candidacy before assuming the award; and
  • in the data collection and/or writing stage of the dissertation

Pre-Dissertation Fellowships

All Pre-Dissertation applicants must be:
  1. Enrolled/employed at a US academic institution, and
  2. US citizens
Each Pre-Dissertation Fellowship applicant must:
  • be an individual member of AIBS (click here for membership information) (http://www.aibs.net/?q=membership/individual) and
  • have completed at least one year of graduate study in a recognized Ph.D. granting institution and
  • enrolled in a graduate program but not yet at the dissertation research or writing stage

Fellowships for Bangladesh Citizens
For Bangladesh Citizens conducting  research in the US.  The American Institute of Bangladesh Studies accepts research fellowship applications for Bangladesh scholars interested in conducting research in the US that involves academic disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. These fellowships are 2 months in duration and are supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Bangladesh. Applicants must coordinate with an AIBS member institution to oversee their proposed research and scholars awarded a fellowship will be required to give a lecture at the AIBS member institution during their fellowship.

Each Bangladesh Fellowship applicant must be:
  1. A Bangladesh Citizen
  2. Affiliated with an academic institution in Bangladesh (PhD candidate, or faculty member)
     
Each Bangladesh Fellowship applicant must:
  • Have a research proposal involving the Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Have a letter of sponsorship from US faculty who are affiliated with an AIBS institution
  • Have a well-developed research agenda on Bangladesh or are interested in developing a research agenda on Bangladesh
 
 

Materials needed for AIBS Fellowship Applications (in addition to the application form):
  • CV (in pdf form, no bigger than 8 megabytes, 2 page maximum)
  • Proposal of Project (typewritten, no more than 10 double-spaced pages, describing in detail the research project, no more than 8 megabytes in pdf form). The statement should include a summary of the significance of the project and the methodology utilized in the study. The statement should clearly state the relevance of the program to the applicant’s professional experience, professional development, and field of specialization.
  • 3 Letters of Recommendation
  • Bibliography (optional, not required)
  • Transcripts (unofficial, as long as they are legible, in pdf format)
  • Project Abstract (approx. 1500 characters in pdf format)
 
NOTE:For Fellows from Bangladesh, applicants will also be required to submit a letter of sponsorship from US faculty affiliated with an AIBS institution
 
Materials needed for Domestic Travel Grants for US Citizens (in addition to the application form):
  • CV (in pdf form, no bigger than 8 megabytes, 2 page maximum)
  • Letter of Invitation (an email or pdf evidence of the applicant’s paper having been accepted)
  • Letter of support/reference from a faculty advisor (students only)
 
Materials needed for International Travel Grants for Bangladesh Citizens (in addition to the application form):
  • Letter of support and/or invitation from an academic institution or scholarly conference in the U.S. (email or pdf format)
  • Letter of support from a faculty advisor if you are a PhD candidate
  • Paper Abstract (400 words or less, no larger than 2 MB, typed in text box of application)
